For 25 years I have raced in just about every endurance sport there is on land and water. Over the years it has become more about the journey than the result. That might sound like a toss, but when you look at the places we have visited and the people we have met, over the last 5 or so years, you would understand why we keep doing it! Africa, Hawaii, the Caribbean … what a great way to see the world.
While I love paddling, it is just one way to enjoy the ocean. I still do a lot of swimming, fishing and surfing as, hopefully, this will preserve the body and mind…allowing me to compete against my buddies well into the age groups. It is not uncommon for me to finish in the top 5 of a race but out of the top 3 in the over 40s! This says that a lot of other guys are thinking the same as me. Great sport – great fun!
Date of Birth: 1967
Country of Birth: Australia
Current Residence: Australia
Profession: Financial Advisor
Height: 183cm
Weight: 85kg
Hobbies: Anything to do with the ocean...and golf
Favorite Paddling Location: Perth, nothing else has come close really
Athletic Goals: To be in the mix. It is so competitive now, that a bad day means you are out of the top 10 and a good day means you could get top 3. Always fun racing Gardiner, Kenny, Nesbitt and Jarrott. None of us like the flat, so when the wind blows, a lot of tail chopping goes on…and we have a chance of keeping up with the young guns!
Training/Racing Philosophy: If you want to be competitive there are no short cuts. You still have to do minimum 4 to 5 paddling sessions a week. With demanding children and a business to run I have to be very efficient with my training, so when I get to paddle it is always pretty hard. Probably to 60-80k / week with a mixture of downwind and flatwater interval type training.
