1st Race World Cup

1st Race World Cup
1st World Cup Race, Perth, Australia

The South African KIA Menshealth team dominated in the 1st leg of the World Cup surf ski race in Perth Australia. Herman Chalupsky led from start to finish and South Africa are leading the team event. The race was a very close affair. At the 1st Marker Buoy it was Herman and Oscar followed by Barry Lewin (SA), Clint Pretorious (SA) and Daryl Bartho (SA) all with in 30 seconds. There-after Herman and Oscar pulled away from the rest of the field but the chasing pack of South Africans stayed together. On the beach for the 1st portage Herman lead Oscar by 2 boat lengths, but Oscar has an incident with the turning flag and bent his rudder. At the next portage Herman had pulled out about 38 meters on Oscar and after Oscar got his rudder sorted out the gap was about 75 meters.

The last leg saw the top international field closing in as the wind got up and made for good surfing conditions. Barry Lewin and Clinton Pretorius overtook the tiring Oscar Chalupsky to take second and third. Daryl Bartho and the only Australian in the mix Dave Kissane closed on Oscar making for a very close finish. There was 1 minute separating 2nd to 9th places.

The one disappointment for the Kia MensHealth Team was Dawid Mocke who was just inside the top ten when his ski sank. He couldn’t finish but will hopefully be ready for tomorrows 29km race from Rottenest Island to Hillary harbour. The South African team is going to try and dominate in the longer race and settle the old score from last year when they were winning on the 1st day and lost on the second day. Pre race favorite from Aus, Dean Gardner also failed to finish.

Herman Chalupsky says “ I went hard at the start to get a lead while the waves and winds were small and light. The only guy with me was Oscar so I felt really comfortable the whole way. This is the same result as last year and now for the big one tomorrow to settle the score. They are predicting strong following winds which will suit me” Barry Lewin who finished second says “ I was going well and it was one of my best results, it always gives me great pleasure to beat one of the Chalupsky brothers”

Oscar who didn’t have it all his way today said” Herman had a good race and I thought we had 1st and 2nd rapped up but it wasn’t to be. Tomorrow will be a better day for me hopefully and also for the South African team. I think our team have really showed the international surf ski paddlers who is the best surf ski paddling nation in the world”
