Get Stronger, Go Faster!
Where do paddlers go in winter? Why, to the weight room - as do many top cyclists, swimmers and even runners. Building strength in specific muscle groups, as well as rebuilding muscle in areas of neglect or overuse, are all part of the strategy. When waters are frozen and the roads icy, the weight room makes good use of time freed up by the enforced cut back of the repetitive, interval and aerobic workouts which make up the bulk of your training. Once the season is upon you, cut back sharply or completely from weight training; the systematic break down of muscle tissue which is de rigueur for building muscle and strength is not a desirable modus once the season is underway.
